ABOUT DENTAL IMPLANTS AND IMPLANTOLOG
Implantology is considered today to be the best method of the lost teeth replacement. Although considered a relatively new field of dentistry, dental implants were first mounted in 1967.
They have suffered, over the years, many changes of form and structure and have become what the implants are today, after years of research, as the result of over 40 years of clinical experience.
As a brief history, the implants used in present are the result of research done by the Swedish orthopedic surgeon Branemark Per-Invar, who, in 1982 in Toronto, presented the results of 15 years of work substantiating the principles of Osseo integration.
He, the first, demonstrated that bone fuses to the surface of certain materials.
What should you know, as a patient, about implants?
In the following lines we try to answer some questions that our patients ask frequently.
What an implant is?
Dental implants are artificial roots firmly anchored in the jaw bone that supports artificial teeth.
When implants are recommended?
Implants are recommended when one or more teeth are missing.
There are many treatment solutions with implants designed to take into account the medical and personal needs of each patient.
The dentist can recommend the best solution for each patient.
What materials are implants made of?
Dental implants are made of pure titanium, a material proved to be accepted by living tissues (biocompatible). Side effects to titanium are extremely rare.
Why the application of implants is recommended?
Dental implants keep the jaws bones functionality after tooth loss.
After losing a tooth, a chain reaction could appear, which, in extreme cases can lead to loss of all teeth.
Practically, the bone supporting the teeth begins to reabsorb. Dental implants significantly reduce this risk.
Implants also can restore the whole physiognomy of patient, his confidence and ability to eat everything he wants.
Are there any age limits for implantation?
In practice it is not recommend implant installation at patients whose bones are not fully developed yet, but a good overall health is the decisive factor, not the age.
With older and healthy patients, chances of success are as great as with younger patients.
Is the implant treatment unpleasant or even painful?
No. Implants are usually installed under local anesthesia. The surgery to implant involves minimal discomfort for patient.
How much time must pass after implantation until the installation of new teeth?
In ideal cases, certain implants can be restored prosthetic during the same sessions.
That means you can leave your dentist office with temporary teeth. In most cases, however, the patient must wait healing of the bone.
How much do implants last?
Implants carefully groomed and checked by the doctor at regular intervals can last a lifetime. Many patients had implants 15 years or more.
The probability that an implant is fully functional after 10 years is more than 90%.
